Ford Fiesta XR2i - the Dagenham dustbin!
Hi all
After some encouragement from Laura I've bought a cheapy to get out on track in! It's a 93 Fiesta with a 2000cc silver top Zetec in it - has been stored on a drive for the last few years so is a bit grim but nothing a little elbow grease won't sort out. Big jobs are to sort out the brakes, which look like they've been stored under the sea, and replace the water pump (not quite broken but the pulley is eccentric as hell and its leaking a smidge) and the timing belt (you have to take it off to get to the water pump so you may as well). A few other tidying jobs and a set of partworns, and we should be ready to test!

Hi Frodo
Hope you manage to get it prepped without too much hassle, it looks like a fun car and it will be good to see you back on the circuits again
Looks like a really tidy car except for that colour under the bonnet, with the rust spots it makes the engine bay look like a half empty tub of mint choc-chip ice cream

Yeah it is a very unpleasant colour! I'll try to paint it white as and when, but I'll be brush-painting not spraying - this is meant to be a cheap car need to do the sills/underside as a priority before they rust away!

The cam cover looks like a black top zetec (is it plastic?) The covers can be interchanged between the engines but it is posssible that you have a more modern engine than you where led to believe?
If it is a silvertop standard tune on 45's you would be looking at 165bhp.

Hi Ed,
I wasn't sure, but my engine code is NGA which apparently makes it a Phase 2 silvertop (but with a black cam cover)...

Re: Ford Fiesta XR2i - the Dagenham dustbin!
Yep they did make a few of them just to confuse people like me
Re: Ford Fiesta XR2i - the Dagenham dustbin!
Fiesta update - sills derusted, rear coilovers and strut brace fitted, body tidied, rear brakes stripped/rebuilt, better seat fitted, new battery fitted and the box moved... It's all go!
Unfortunately I still can't get the wobble out of the NSF wheel, and I broke a race on the new wheel bearing trying to (brute force and ignorance failed). Inner and outer CV joints (and another wheel bearing kit!) next. Then I'll put the rebuilt front brakes on with some s/h Koni adjustables, and swap timing belt/waterpump before servicing it... Getting there!

Have you bought it all Ed?!
I thought about ditching the orange but I'd have had to paint the wingmirrors anyway and it kinda grew on me. Plus stripes add at least 10bhp, everyone knows that

Re: Ford Fiesta XR2i - the Dagenham dustbin!
Sometime in August or Sept hopefully, but no plans more than that. I'm off on holiday in ten days, then have a survival course for two weeks in Sept before I go back to Cyprus/Iraq until December (then maybe Plum Pud if Laura doesn't mind!), so time is against me a little bit. I definitely plan on doing an evening trackday at Snett before I enter a race though!

Looks like you've done another signature "Frodo" makeover
Its come up really well, looking forward to seeing it out on the racetracks.

Wheel wobble finally sorted, struts swapped, halfway through the belt service... But not going to make Brands getting there though!

Re: Ford Fiesta XR2i - the Dagenham dustbin!
Long time no update (been busy doing 'stuff' over Iraq) - managed to pick up a quality set of 4 secondhand Leda coilovers which Gaz have rebuilt for me. Also sold the Kitten and moved the Fiesta into the garage! Plans for the next two weeks of R&R are to swap the struts for the decent set, swap the wishbones at the same time (the ones on the car have knackered bushes), then get the bugger running and try to do a trackday. Need to get some material milled off my calipers though, anybody know someone near King's Lynn who can do that?
Cheers,
Frodo

Hi Frodo
Sad to hear the Kitten has gone, but it will free up space and funding to get you back on track again
Not sure on where to get the milling done, other than Workshops.
If you get it ready in time, how about racing it at Snetterton in November (see bargain racing in the events area)?

I'd love to but I'll be back out on Op Shader on Nov 4th until December - hence Plum Pud (maybe) as my debut in it!

Regs and entry form for plum pud have not been issued yet, but as soon as they are, they will be posted on here.

Re: Ford Fiesta XR2i - the Dagenham dustbin!
Top mounts on, rear shocks on (after a little fettling), fronts/uprights/calipers off being machined so that (finally!) everything goes together properly. Means no testing and no Plum Pud this year but at least it'll be sorted once and for all. Also picked up an RS Turbo gearbox - which comes with LSD......

Re: Ford Fiesta XR2i - the Dagenham dustbin!
Finally back in the UK! You may have seen me on the news doing some stuff in the last couple of weeks
Managed to get out into the garage tonight - OSF corner built up, new wishbone fitted along with machined/painted upright, Leda strut, RS500 caliper and Fiesta ST150 Pagid disc. Pads are Mintex M1144 for now as they're cheap!
Also have rebuilt the RS Turbo gearbox:
I'm planning on doing a bit of time with the standard box to see what the ratios are like, then try the RS Turbo box, then probably build a hybrid of the two. We'll see!
