IAN (BILLY) FLETCHER
My name is Ian, but since joining the RAF many years ago, I have been known as Billy (long story).
Started building my first kit car (Spartan) in 1976, then a Dutton Phaeton in 1980. After lots of complaining about having to re-design various parts of these cars, designed my own sevenesque style car (Fletcher Hornet) with rear independent suspension, in the mid 80's. The Hornet Mk1, with a 1600 Ford Crossflow was completed in 1987 and used for various sprints/hillclimbs championships. Two Mk2 kits were produced (again with Ford Crossflows) for 1991 to go circuit racing in the 750MC Kit Car Championship. The Mk3 was produced in 1993 with a Rover V8 engine, again for the 750MC kit car championships. In 2003 an unfinished Mk2 kit was adapted to take a Suzuki TLR V-twin motorbike engine, and with fully enveloping bodywork became the Mk4. This was used in the 750MC RGB Championship, NSSCC, RAFMSA Race Challenge, RAFMSA Speed Challenge, AFRC and various other events.
Ian Smythe converted a Mk2 to Ford Zetec power and I bought this car back from him last year.
I was the RAFMSA Motor Racing Comp Sec from 1996 to 2010. Thanks to Martyn Astley, I had a few years experience as an ARDS instructor.
